What is Gradescope?

Gradescope is an online platform that dramatically improves grading and feedback workflows by helping faculty seamlessly administer and grade assessments, whether online or in-class.

Whether you're grading bubble sheets, short-answer assignments, STEM worksheets, or even programming assignments, Gradscope allows you to save time grading and get a clear picture of how your students are doing.

Logging into Gradescope for the First Time

Faculty can create a Gradescope account one of two ways:

  • Step 1: Visit Gradescope.com and select Sign Up in the top right corner of the page.

Step 2: Select Sign Up as an Instructor.

Step 3: Complete the required fields as follows:

    1. Your first and last name
    2. Your TXST NetID email address (ex: xyz123@txstate.edu)
Note: You must enter your NetID@txstate.edu. Entering email aliases (ex: boko@txstate.edu) will create duplicate accounts and cause errors in the system
    3. School: Texas State University
Note: The drop-down menu may not display our institution; continue by typing out Texas State University in the field provided

Step 4: Select Sign Up as an Instructor

  • TXST SSO login capabilities will be enabled in Gradescope soon. Accounts can still be created prior to that enablement, but all accounts must be created through NetID email addresses to avoid errors.

  • Student FAQs

    • When trying to submit a paper-based assignment (homework/problem set or exam/quiz) and you're having issues assigning questions to the pages, you can try the following workaround solution that allows you to ultimately assign questions to your assignment pages. More details.

    • Instructors can access the your previous submissions at any time in the submission history. If you've already uploaded a file and a submission needs to be deleted, we recommend:

      • Reaching out to your instructor and asking them to delete a submission for you.
      • Resubmitting to your assignment before the due date, and it will override your previous submission. For a programming assignment, note that if your instructor has set a limit on the number of submissions allowed, you cannot resubmit past that limit.
    • Unfortunately, Gradescope is unable to reopen assignment deadlines or enable exceptions for resubmissions. Additionally, your institution most likely has their own policy for submitting past an assignment deadline, and so this isn’t something our Support Team can modify.

If you are unable to submit to an assignment and the due date has passed, we recommend raising this with your instructor directly.

    • Under GDPR, CCPA, and other applicable data privacy laws, individuals may have the right to request erasure of their personal data. However, since Turnitin operates as a data processor on behalf of academic institutions, which act as data controllers, we cannot process deletion requests directly from individual users. We will promptly act on any valid deletion request submitted by your institution.

If you wish to request the deletion of your account, please contact your academic institution directly.

    • No, you cannot remove a submission after it has been uploaded to Gradescope.

However, you can try the following things if you've already uploaded a file:

      • Reach out to your instructor and ask them to delete a submission for you.
      • Resubmit to your assignment before the due date, and it will override your previous submission. For a programming assignment, note that if your instructor has set a limit on the number of submissions allowed, you cannot resubmit past that limit.

    • After an instructor has graded an assignment, you will receive a notification if your grades are made available to view.

If you’ve been notified that your graded assignment is available and are having trouble viewing it (or getting an error message), it could be that your grades have now been unpublished.

Please contact your instructor for more information.

    • Only instructors, TAs, and readers have the ability to add and remove students from a course. You will be notified if you are enrolled in a course.

      • If you’ve received a notification that you are enrolled in a course and are having trouble accessing it, please contact your instructor for more assistance. It could be that your instructor has since removed you from the course.

If you’re having trouble joining a course using the course code or finding an enrollment email, check out our guidance on joining a course.

If you seem to be missing courses or assignments when you log in, it could be that you have multiple Gradescope accounts under different email addresses.

      • To make things easier, you can merge your accounts to access all your courses and assignments from one account.

    • If you’re having trouble submitting your assignment, check that your web browser is compatible with Gradescope's requirements and isn’t outdated in our What browsers does Gradescope support? Also, we recommend clearing cookies and your web browser cache to possibly fix the issue.

Keep in mind that for Programming/Online/Timed assignments, you can only submit them through a web browser. When you use the Gradescope mobile app to submit this type of assignment, you will be redirected to Gradescope via a mobile web browser.
